The weather conditions across the United Sates are starting to reflect the new season that is upon us spring. The problem with spring time is that pest will begin to emerge from their winter dens and start searching for food, and water. The National Pest Management Association has the following tips for you to do to the exterior or outdoor area of your home to help prevent pest from bothering you this spring.

The first tip is to take your time and inspect the outside of the home for easy access points where pest or other insects can enter your home. Common areas include utility pipes cracks in the seal of the door, and cracks in the foundation. The cracks or breaches can be easily sealed using a silicon based caulk found at your local hardware store.

The next tip is to always be vigilant and pay attention to signs of a pest infestation. Some examples of a termite infestation are mud tubes, soft wood, hallow wood, and cracked or bubbling paint. If you see any of these signs contact a pest control specialist like Johnny B’s today!

Keep up with landscaping by keeping grass cut low, and making sure tree branches are not touching the home. If you have vegetation touching your home you’re at an increased risk of pests because many pests will travel from vegetation into your home. This include removing leaves and other debris from the gutters to prevent standing water which many pest species love and need to survive.

Repair old fascia or rotted out roof singles termites and other wood boring insects are drawn to decaying wood. It is also important to replace weather-stripping and loose mortar around the basement foundation and windows. Screen windows along with attics vents and openings for chimneys can also be problem areas where pest can enter the home so make sure they are properly sealed.

The final tips to protect the outside of your home for pest are to direct all water drainage away from the home. Along with storing firewood at least 20 feet away from the home so that termites are not drawn into your home. It is also important to keep mulch at least 15 feet away from your home’s foundation.
